Whether you are looking to study at a university, school, vocational or English language institute, you will need to apply for a student visa to start your studies in Australia. Applications are subject to different assessment levels depending on the passport you hold and what subclass of student visa you apply for.   This will determine the English level required and amount of money you need to pay. English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) 
Subclass: 570
Eligibility: For students wanting to study English as principal course, not leading to an award
Duration: Duration of ELICOS course
Notes: You must provide evidence of enrolment in a course of study and remain enrolled in such course.
   
Primary or Secondary School Course  
Subclass: 571
Eligibility: For students who will be studying at a school.
Duration: Duration of course
Notes: You must provide evidence of enrolment in a course of study and remain enrolled in such course.
   
Vocational Education and Training  
Subclass: 572
Eligibility: For students wanting to study a course leading to Certificate I, II, III, IV, Diploma, Advance Diploma, or an Advance Certificate.

Notes: You must provide evidence of enrolment in a course of study and remain enrolled in such course.
   
Higher Education  
Subclass: 573
Eligibility: For students taking tertiary level courses.
Duration: Duration of course
Notes: You must provide evidence of enrolment in a course of study and remain enrolled in such course.
   
Postgraduate Research  
Subclass: 574
Eligibility: For students taking master degree and doctoral degree.
Duration: Duration of course
Notes: You must provide evidence of enrolment in a course of study and remain enrolled in such course.
   
Non-Award  
Subclass: 575
Eligibility: This visa is for the study of courses that do not lead to an Australian award.
Duration: Duration of course
Notes: You must provide evidence of enrolment in a course of study and remain enrolled in such course.
   
AusAID and Defence  
Subclass: 576
Eligibility: This category only applies to students sponsored by AusAID or the Australian Department of Defence undertaking full-time courses of any type.

Student Guardians  
Subclass: 580
Eligibility: This visa allows either a parent or relative of a student who is studying in Australia to stay in Australia to act as their guardian while they are studying.
Duration: Duration of course
Notes: Must be a parent or guardian of the student. Must demonstrate that the applicant and nominating student have a genuine intention of living together in Australia.
   
Student Graduate Temporary Visa  
Subclass: 485
Eligibility: Must be under 45 years old,
Duration: 18 months from time of grant, in the last 6 months completed an eligible qualification in Australia as a result of 2 years study, unable to meet the passmark for general skilled migration (GSM) and has the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the SOL Listsol-schedule1-2.pdf sol-schedule1-2.pdf (200.95 KB) and your nominated occupation is either 60 or 50 points.
Notes: This visa provides the right to work and time to gain the extra points needed to pass the GSM
